LOGOI engineers, poor jokes, and great scholarships

One of our Board Members a few years back was a super smart engineer named, Bruce. He loved this joke: “There are 10 different kinds of people. Those who understand binary, and those who don’t.” He would then laugh and laugh and I would just stare at him not having a clue what he just said or why that was funny.

Bruce is now hanging out with Moses who I’m sure is helping him learn how to tell better jokes. Despite being so different in the way God made us, I always felt Bruce was fond of me despite my simple mind. I could make him laugh and he could fix and improve anything man made. It seemed like a good trade off to me.

As a LOGOI Board Member, Bruce would remind me that it is helpful to let people know how things at LOGOI worked every now and then. He loved the “mechanics” of our Bible study programs — how the courses were put together in order to achieve certain goals — with one overlying focus: to “Equip God’s people to do His work and build up the church, the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12).

Bruce liked the details regarding how our Bible courses were structured to help students interpret the Bible, defend the Christian faith, and be equipped to serve in the local church—whether by teaching, preaching, evangelizing, serving as a leader, or counseling others in need of help. “This is really good” he would say while simultaneously working out Pythagorean’s Theorem in his head.

Without going into all the specific details Bruce liked to discuss, I thought it would be good to review one of our key ministries, our Bible courses. LOGOI offers eight Bible certificate programs consisting of three courses of study covering specific areas of Christian knowledge and service. Some are designed to help prepare people to lead Bible studies in places like churches, schools, small groups and prisons. We have Bible courses to help elders and deacons strengthen their leadership in the local church including studies in administration, evangelism, and discipleship. We also have an excellent “disciple making” course to help Christians strive to be more like Christ.

Years and years of study and planning went into developing each course and if Bruce were here, he could spend hours reviewing the details of why they work. All I’ll say, however, is that “God is using them to help ‘equip His people to do His work and build up His church.’”

So here’s a practical donation idea both Bruce and I want you to know. Every year, hundreds of would-be Bible students ask for scholarship help in order to take their studies. Our Bible courses cost $45.00 but for many, that sum may as well be $4,500; it is simply unattainable. I suspect you already know LOGOI will never turn someone down who wants to study God’s Word. LOGOI will always offer a scholarship whether it’s 50% or 100%.

You can provide a $45 scholarship for one of our students — or for five or ten or a hundred or more if God so leads. These are “high impact” gifts which go directly to those focused on “doing His work and building up the church.” It’s also a great joy for us to report back to you the area(s) of the Spanish-speaking world where your gift is helping proclaim the Gospel.

So there you go. A practical donation idea Bruce would be very happy for you to know about. It’s so easy, you don’t even have to understand binary codes or complicated theorems to participate. But if you do understand those things, I could use a little help understanding Bruce’s joke.
